Conclusion of Mansfield’s Raz-Kids Summer Reading 2014!

We had over 50 students log on during our final week and 20 of them logged on 4 or more times and received the 500 Bonus Star prize!  Congratulations to all!

Please take a minute to fill out the evaluation survey of the Mansfield Summer Raz Kids program.  All responses are confidential and help us to improve our summer programing.

Thank you to all the parents for your support!  It’s been wonderful to be part of your student’s reading journey. I am really impressed with the excitement the students have for reading and also the effort they put into it!  What a great start to the school year they should have.  I will be sending a report to all of the kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 teachers so that they can check in on progress that was made over the summer.

Just a reminder that our official summer program though Mansfield Public Schools is complete.  Your child will NOT be able to access the program after August 19th because class lists will be changed to be used for the school year.

Use of the Raz-Kids program during the school year will be up to the individual teacher.  If you find that your child’s teacher is a participant in the program, your child will continue his/her progress from where he/she left off over the summer unless the teacher feels that a level needs to be reviewed.

Once again, thank you for all of your support in keeping your child/children reading throughout the summer!  Enjoy the school year ahead!

Best wishes,
Karen LeFevre

Welcome to Week 7! The final week of Raz-Kids Summer Reading!

It has been a great summer so far and many students have been able to move up levels in Raz-Kids with all the time spent reading.  I’m hoping the excitement keeps up for the last week as well!
Last challenge! Students who log on at least 4 times and read for at least 20 minutes, each time this week, will be awarded the highest number of stars available for me to give out…500 Bonus Stars!
Students who log on 3x and read for at least 20 minutes each time will receive 150 Bonus Stars.
This is our last official week of the Mansfield Summer Raz Reading Program.

Tip of the Week: After your child listens to a story this week, have him/her read the story aloud to you and discuss it together before he/she takes the quiz.

Thanks for all of your support in keeping your child/children reading throughout the summer!

Welcome to Week 6 of Raz-Kids Summer Reading!

Challenge! Challenge!  Challenge!
If your child logs on 4x this week for 20 minutes each time they will receive:
300 BONUS STARS!
That’s double the amount of stars from the last challenge!
(Plus more if they complete a level!)

Tip of the Week: Continue to encourage your child to read each week! Did you know that many Raz-Kids books include fascinating video clips that bring information alive for readers? For example, the clips in Ants, Ants, and More Ants (level G) and Plight of the Polar Bear will make interesting topics even more engaging for students.

Thanks for all of your support in keeping your child/children reading throughout the summer!

Did you get to read yet?  What was your favorite book so far this summer?

Welcome to Week 5 of Raz-Kids Summer Reading!

Way to go!  27 students in Mansfield met the Summer Raz Challenge!  4 students met the challenge for both weeks!

Tip of the Week:  Be sure that students know they can use the ‘Back’ button to listen to pages of a book again. They can also use the ‘Pause’ and ‘Play’ buttons to stop and start the narration.

Thanks for all of your support in keeping your child/children reading throughout the summer!

Did you get to read something yet?  Don’t forget to take some time for you too!

Welcome to Week 4 of Raz-Kids Summer Reading!

I am so impressed each week with the number of students that are taking part in Raz-Kids Summer Reading!  Several students even met the CHALLENGE I put out but I think even more can do it so...the CHALLENGE has been extended to this week as well!  Make sure your child reads the message from me when they get on to Raz-Kids this week!

Tip of the Week:  Raz-Kids offers a wonderful opportunity for your child to listen to and read stories on his/her own but nothing replaces YOU READING TO YOUR CHILD!  Squeeze in some time each week to curl up with your child and read TOGETHER!

Don’t forget:
·        To encourage your child to listen to the Raz book first, then read it on his/her own and finally take the quiz on it.  Your child will be most successful this way and use her/her time efficiently.
·        To make sure your child is pressing the ‘HOME’ button after he/she reads, listens to or takes a quiz on a story so that they get the checkmarks they have earned.
·        Raz-Kids www.raz-kids.com can be reached from any computer with internet access!  Feel free to connect at the library, Mansfield Community Center, etc.

Enjoy summer and be sure to take some time to read a book yourself! :)

Welcome to Week 3 of Raz-Kids Summer Reading!

Were you able to take the time to listen and watch your child use Raz-Kids last week?  If not, I really encourage you to do so and see what it is they love about it so much!

Raz-Kids can be reached from any computer with internet access!  Feel free to connect at the library, Mansfield Community Center, etc.!

Tip of the Week: Did you know that students’ reading comprehension can only be as strong as their listening comprehension?  Make sure you child is listening to the stories as well as reading them!  The quiz should only be taken after both of these things have been done in order to be most successful and efficient.

Don’t forget that all books read on Raz-Kids are eligible for the Mansfield Library’s Summer Program as well!

Enjoy summer and be sure to take some time to read a book yourself! :)

Welcome to Week 2 of Raz-Kids Summer Reading!

I am so impressed with how many children logged on this week!  Try to have your child log in at least 3 times each week and read for 20 minutes each time.  www.raz-kids.com
Encourage your child to listen to a story and then read the story out loud before taking the quiz. He/she will have the most success that way.  (I do not have the Record option selected for the summer to have the children send recordings to me.)

Tip of the Week: Take a day this week to sit with your child as he/she using Raz-Kids so that you can see how the program works and if your child is using it correctly.  Encourage them to visit the Raz-Rocket only after they have read for at least 20 minutes to reward themselves.

Don’t forget that all books read on Raz-Kids are eligible to be on the Mansfield Library’s Summer Program as well!

Enjoy summer and be sure to take some time to read a book yourself! :)

It's Kickoff Day
for Mansfield Summer Raz!

It is so exciting that so many children want to read!   WELCOME BACK to those who have used the program with us before; it is wonderful to see so many familiar names!  WELCOME ABOARD to our newcomers!

I have sent a message to each child that they should see when they log into Raz-Kids.   Each week I will send an email out, to a link on the blog, to remind everyone to keep reading.  Students should be signing in and reading for at least 20 minutes each time.  Through the teacher account, I can see how many times a child has logged in, how much time they spent reading, how much time they spent playing in their rockets, and if they listened to, read or took a quiz on a book.  I will definitely be encouraging students to put their reading time in first and then rewarding themselves with time in the rocket.  (The more they read and take quizzes, the more fun the rocket is anyway!)

I know many families go on vacation over the summer, so it is okay to skip a week.  I want students to continue their reading growth; I don't want anyone to be stressed about it!  Some people have also said that the week before or after they will have their child use the account extra times.  It is really up to you!

Tip of the week:
Establish a time that your child can use Raz-Kids. Routine is the best way to keep up the practice.
        Examples might be:
  • Before they go to camp in the morning on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before they watch any evening TV
  • Saturday, Sunday and Monday when they wake up
  • Other....choose times that work for your family and try to stick to them

Enjoy summer and be sure to take some time to read a book yourself! :)

Welcome to Mansfield Summer Raz 2014!

Welcome to Mansfield’s Summer Raz!

Try to log on as soon as possible to make sure everything is working correctly.  The official start to the program is June 30th but it can be accessed as soon as you receive this message.

Go to:

Raz-kids.com and click on the student login button or if a 'Raz Kids' class shows up, just click -'This is not my class' and type in the new Teacher Username.

·        Goodwin students now in grade 1, 2 or 3 will use the teacher USERNAME:123Goodwin

  • Southeast students now in grade 1 & 2 will use the teacher USERNAME: 12Southeast
  • Southeast 3rd grade students will use the teacher USERNAME: 3Southeast

  • Vinton students now in grade 1, 2  or 3 will use the teacher USERNAME:123Vinton

Your child should look for his/her first name and last initial.  Click on that and the PASSWORD is your child’s last name.  Uppercase at the beginning and then all lower case unless you have another uppercase in your name, like mine.  If the name has a hyphen, that is not included and the 2 last names are as one (i.e.:Smith-Johnston is SmithJohnston)

At all levels, students need to listen, read, and take a quiz on each book in order to move to the next level.  I’ll send out tips and reminders each week about the program to help guide you through.

As always, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me!

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Summer vacation is just around the corner and I want to make sure that your child continues to make progress in his or her reading during the break. Our district has a subscription to Raz-Kids.com, which allows your child to access an online library of reading materials from any computer connected to the Internet. Raz-Kids helps students improve their reading skills as they listen to a book read to them which models fluency.  Next, they read the book to themselves or aloud for practice and then take an interactive quiz at the end of each book to check for understanding.  If your child has been involved with this program throughout this school year, he/she will be able to continue right where he/she left off!

I have been a certified elementary teacher for 24 years and have been teaching at Annie E. Vinton School for the past 14 years.  I will be overseeing your child’s progress this summer.  Through a blog I will be in contact with you throughout the summer and I will also be sending your child messages of encouragement through Raz-Kids.

If this is something your child and you are interested in, go to www.mansfieldrazkids.blogspot.com to access the registration link by   Friday, JUNE 20, 2014. There is no cost for your involvement!  I will contact you, via email, on how to access your child’s reading assignment.  (If your child had a password from his/her teacher this year, it may be different for the summer.)

I hope you will join us for some summer learning fun!

Sincerely,
Karen LeFevre
